(Janáček: The Makropulos Case). Bar. A Hungarian nobleman, descendant of Baron Prus (with whom Emila Marty, in her days as Elina Makropulos, had an affair and to whom she had borne a son). He is one of the present contestants in a lawsuit which has gone on for 100 years. The old Baron was believed to have died intestate and with no known children and his cousin had inherited his estate. The Gregor family are claiming it belongs to them, as their ancestor was the Baron's illegitimate son. Emilia Marty is able to locate the old Baron's will, hidden in Prus's house, together with an envelope containing the formula for the elixir of life. She needs another dose in order to survive. Prus gives it to her in exchange for a night with her in a hotel—not a very successful night, we gather, as her coldness has been something of a barrier between them. As he leaves her, he is brought the news that his son has committed suicide for love of Emilia. Created (1926) by Zdeněk Otava.
