A genus of lichens in which the thallus is more or less fruticose. P. furfuracea closely resembles oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) but is black on the underside, and bears isidia rather than soredia. apothecia are rarely formed. This species is common on a range of substrates in hilly districts of the north and west of Britain.
