Quick Reference

A derogatory term for studies and their results based on dubious or spurious science; slipshod methods; false premises, axioms, and assumptions; sensational presentation of findings; predetermined outcomes; and various combinations of the above. Examples include claims for cures of incurable conditions, such as muscular dystrophy and advanced cancer, for human cloning, etc. Sometimes the term is an ad hominem defense of the indefensible, as when industry spokesmen use it as a label in attempts to discredit evidence on the harmful effects of environmental chemical pollution. See also junk science.

Subjects: Literature.
