Quick Reference

An aspect of a conditioning situation in which the unconditional response (UCR) may come to be elicited by stimuli other than the unconditional stimulus (UCS) (as in normal conditioning), even though there is no contingent relationship between them. A possible explanation is generalization to stimuli similar to the UCS. It can also happen that exposure to some kind of shock can alter the animal's motivational state so that it comes to avoid any external stimulus.
