Any of the colours red, yellow, green, or blue that are basic to the processing of colour in the visual system and are perceived as cardinal or fundamental rather than as mixtures of other colours. Also called a unique colour, unique hue, or primary colour, though the latter term is ambiguous. See also Bezold-Brücke phenomenon, spectrum.
