Small, dark reddish-brown seeds of Plantago psyllium or P. ovata, also known as plantago, flea seed; the source of ispaghula gum. The seeds form a mucilaginous mass with water, taken medicinally to assist the passage of intestinal contents. Aqueous extracts of psyllium reduce hyperglycaemia in diabetes mellitus by inhibiting the intestinal absorption of glucose.
