The name given to the seaport Acco (Judg. 1: 31) by the Egyptians in the 3rd and 2nd cents. bce and one of the towns which mobilized an army against Judas Maccabaeus (1 Macc. 5: 15). Paul broke his journey to Jerusalem at Ptolemais and spent a day with the Christian community there (Acts 21: 7).
