A protein tyrosine phosphatase (phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10, mutated in multiple advanced cancers 1/phosphatase and tensin homologue, MMAC1/PTEN, TEP-1, 403 aa) that is a tumour suppressor gene on chromosome 10q23. Has homology to tensin. Somatic mutations in PTEN are found in many tumours, particularly glioblastomas. Germ-line mutations in PTEN are responsible for Cowden's disease.
