Quick Reference

Loose, transitory, and heterogeneous social collectivities (not normally termed ‘groups’) unified by shared interest in particular public events or issues (see alsoepistemic community). The members of such collectivities may not necessarily have any direct contact with each other and may be personally unknown to each other. In this sense, any public issue or event has its own public as long as that issue is a matter of widespread public interest, and ‘the public’ does not exist. See alsopublic and private spheres; public opinion.
