The standards expected from those who write, publish, and disseminate research. In response to a number of high-profile research fraud cases, the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) was established in 1997. It is a registered UK charity but has an international membership with most of the major academic biomedical journals represented. Specific issues that fall within the broad remit of COPE and the subject of publication ethics include research misconduct, plagiarism, so-called gift authorship, determination of contribution to research, and peer review processes.
