The role of the lungs in meeting the demands of muscular activity to deliver oxygen and to eliminate carbon dioxide from the pulmonary circulation. Pulmonary function is accomplished by the flow of blood through lung capillaries, by ventilation, and by the diffusion of oxygen from the lungs into the blood and of carbon dioxide from the blood to the air into the lungs.
