Quick Reference

Electricity cannot be stored, so when demand is low, at night, some can be used to pump water from a lower to a higher reservoir. At peak demand, the water is allowed to fall back to the lower level, passing through turbines which turn generators. See Bruch (2007) UNEP Dams and Development, 92–3 on the Palmiet Pumped Storage station, South Africa.
