Another name for post-operative cognitive dysfunction, or a person suffering from post-operative cognitive dysfunction, after open heart surgery with a heart-lung machine. The term was introduced by US surgeons and first gained prominence following an article entitled ‘Pumphead’ in the magazine Scientific American in July 2003.
