A data storage and sorting system based on sequences of holes that are made in cards that are then sorted according to the positions of the holes. This method of processing large data files by means of card-sorting machines was widely used until the advent of electronic computers rendered them obsolete. Varieties included hand-held and machine-sortable punch cards.
