A ‘field of merit’, being an individual or group that is a particularly worthy recipient of a gift. After a Buddha.the greatest field of merit is said to be the monastic order (Saṃgha), and gifts or donations made to monks, for example by providing food or offering cloth for robes (see kaṭhina), are believed to produce greater merit (puṇya) than gifts to other recipients.
