A category of Tamil literature which deals with the ‘exterior world’, i.e. life outside the family (from the valour of kings, to wars, to ethics, to death and dying), as opposed to akam literature which deals with love between men and women. The best-known anthology of puṟam poetry is the Puṟanāṉūṟu.
