The best-known anthology of Tamil puṟam poetry, and one of the earliest surviving works in the language. It represents the work of more than 150 high-caste poets, including at least ten women, who attached themselves to particular kings, or moved from court to court. Their sophisticated literary compositions were modelled on the songs of low-caste drummers and bards.
