Quick Reference

An adjective, often linked with itihāsa (‘Epic’), indicating the time-period, or the typical content, associated with the Purāṇas; it is sometimes used almost synonymously with terms such as ‘medieval Hinduism’, ‘theistic Hinduism’, or simply just ‘Hinduism’, in contradistinction to ‘Vedic’ or ‘Brahmaṇical’ religion. A clearer distinction, however, is that made between between ‘Purāṇic’ and ‘Tantric’, where the former designates Veda-aligned, Brahmanical forms of practice, and the latter practices based on non-Vedic, Tantric revelation.

Subjects: Hinduism.
