A demoness, inimical to children, who takes the form of a beautiful woman in order to kill the infant Kṛṣṇa by suckling him on her poisoned breast. Instead, the god sucks out both her milk and her vital breath, and Pūtanā goes to heaven, simply because she offered her breast to the god, regardless of her evil intention. The story is told in the Bhāgavata Purāṇa and elsewhere.
