Quick Reference

A model, in the form of a pyramid, indicating (claimed or projected) connections between a broad base of participation in sport (at the bottom of the pyramid) and a narrow focused population of top-class performers (at the apex of the pyramid). Some models have included layers of developmental levels from foundation through different levels of performance to the elite or high-performance level. Such models have also been used to justify elite programmes alongside *‘sport for all’ policies, implying—but with patchy supportive evidence—that the base is a necessary precondition for the apex.
