An instrument for measuring the amount of direct solar radiation (i.e. excluding diffuse radiation from the sky) at normal incidence on a surface. Measurements are obtained at noon and at times when the path-length through the atmosphere is an integer multiple of the vertical thickness of the atmosphere. Such sensors may also be operated continuously, being driven to track the Sun.
