Polythematic poem, usually translated as “ode,” composed according to strict metrical requirements. Four main themes (aghrad) may be identified within qasidas: panegyric (madih/madh), lampooning (hija), love (ghazal), and threnody or lamentation (ritha). The most famous collection of poems of this genre is called the Muallaqat from pre-Islamic Arabia.
