A class of voltage-sensitive calcium channels (CaV2.1 (P/Q-type) very similar to P-type channels with the pore-forming subunit being of the α-1A type (CACNA1A, 2506 aa). They are mostly expressed in neuronal tissue and regulate the release of neurotransmitters. They are inhibited by neurotransmitters that act through G-protein-coupled receptors and by high concentrations of ω-*conotoxin and ω-*agatoxin. Mutations in CACNA1A are associated with familial hemiplegic migraine, episodic ataxia type 2, and spinocerebellar ataxia type 6.
