The length of time a worker or an employee has to spend with a single employer before acquiring statutory employment rights under UK law. For example, the right to a redundancy payment and protection from unfair dismissal are only acquired after twelve months' service, whilst the entitlements to paid annual leave and to join a stakeholder pension are acquired after three months. There is no qualifying period for certain employment rights, such as the right not to suffer discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, marital status, and trade union membership.
