One of several Arabic terms meaning “narrative” or “story” (from the verb qassa, “to narrate, recount a story,” found in the Quran). During medieval times, it referred mainly to short, dramatic, nonfictional narrative accounts. Today, the term refers primarily to narrative fiction, especially the short story (qissah qasirah).
