quark star

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A hypothetical star intermediate in density between a neutron star and a black hole. Such a star would consist of free quarks. The forces between the quarks balance the gravitational forces. Quark stars are unlikely to exist in reality, but some models for the cores of neutron stars suggest that the neutrons (and any protons) break up into a broth of quarks.
