A meteor detected by a pulsed radio signal reflected (backscattered) from its ionized trail to a receiver at the same location as the transmitter. Radar observations allow accurate determination of meteor velocities. Meteors are preferentially detected by radar around 90° from the radiant, where they present a broader reflective surface. Radar can detect meteoroids far smaller than those seen visually. See also radio meteor.
