Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The process of interpreting a foreign language without reliance on existing linguistic knowledge or help from bilinguals. The term is sometimes used as if it applied to any process of coming to understand a foreign language, but this is a mistake, since coming to understand does not entail interpretation back into a previously understood medium. See also indeterminacy of translation.
