The spontaneous fission of the nuclei of certain unstable (radioactive) elements or isotopes into more stable configurations, which gives rise to daughter elements or isotopes. In certain cases, these products may themselves be radioactive, and subsequently decay, the process eventually ending with a stable element or isotope.
