Scottish-born Arctic explorer and successful participator in the Franklin Search. John Rae was born at Hall of Clestrain near Stromness in the Orkney Islands, the son of John and Margaret Rae. His father was factor to the Laird of Armadale and sometime local agent for the Hudson's Bay Company. Rae enrolled at the University of Edinburgh at the age of sixteen, and in 1833 he qualified as a licentiate of the Royal Scottish College of Surgeons.
