Quick Reference

A phase of devotion (bhakti) in a sequence devised by the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava theologian, Rūpa Gosvāmī in his Bhaktirasāmṛtasindhu (‘Ocean of the Immortal Nectar of Devotion’). It is known as the ‘following (anugā) of passion (rāga)’, because it is modelled on the devotion of the gopīs for Kṛṣṇa. It is contrasted with vaidhībhakti, devotion according to rules (vidhis), in which Kṛṣṇa is worshipped in a more conservative fashion.
