Quick Reference

A land-based radio station which transmits characteristic medium-frequency radio signals the bearing of which can be measured from a ship fitted with a radio direction finder and so provide the navigator with a position line. For this purpose the system is now largely obsolete, but radio beacon stations are now used in over 30 countries, including most European maritime countries, for monitoring DGPS (Differential Global Navigation Satellite System) services for satellite navigation. When the network is complete some 126 stations will be operational.
