2 (Wagner: Rienzi). Cardinal, the Papal Legate who excommunicates Rienzi. Created (1842) by Gioachino Vestri. (In his Life of Richard Wagner, i, Ernest Newman describes how, during a break in rehearsals, the cast went out for lunch, leaving Wagner sitting on the stage. He was unable to join them, as he had no money, but did not want anyone to realize this. Vestri, however, must have had an idea of the position, for he came back and brought Wagner a piece of bread and a glass of wine.)
