scholar and ecclesiastical politician. He was ordained to the ministry in the Free Church of Scotland in 1851; from 1874, when he became Principal of New College, Edinburgh, and leader of the General Assembly, he dominated the counsels of the Free Church and later of the United Free Church. He exercised a liberalizing influence in theology and joined in the campaign for the disestablishment of the Church of Scotland (c.1875–c.1895). His last great achievement was the union of the Free and United Presbyterian Churches in 1900.
