Quick Reference

According to Sāṃkhya-Yoga ontology, one of the three gunas, or strands, of material nature (prakṛti), rajas is characterized as ‘passionate’; concomitantly, it represents the principle of kinesis or energy. Since the tripartite guṇa division is extended to various other categories, rajas is also, for instance, used to characterize a group of (rājasa) mahāpurāṇas belonging to Brahmā, and certain ‘hot’ (i.e. stimulating) foods.
