(b. 1947)

Leader of Mujahidin-i Khalq in Iran. Opposed the Pahlavi regime. His organization grew into a major force after the Iranian revolution (1979). During the 1980s the group countered the new regime's state terror with its own brand of revolutionary terror, including assassinations and bombings. Its leadership was forced into exile in Iraq. After 1986, sought to replace the Islamic republic with a democratic Islamic republic. By the summer of 1990, was powerful enough to constitute a significant threat to the existing government, but had declined in significance by the late 1990s.
