Quick Reference

Act of prostration accompanying ritual prayers. Often used broadly to include words and actions surrounding prayer, particularly in Sufi orders. Prayers are begun with the supplicant facing Mecca. The supplicant kneels and then leans forward to touch the forehead to the ground during prayer or Quranic recitation, returning to knees upon conclusion. There are two to four prostrations, depending on time of day.
