Fruit of the evergreen tree Nephelium lappaceum; covered with yellowish-red, soft spines with large seed surrounded by white juicy flesh, similar to lychee, and sometimes called hairy lychee. The name means ‘hairy man of the jungle’ in Bahasa-Malay, reflecting the appearance of the fruit. The pulasan (N. rambutan-ake syn. N. mutabile) is similar.
