[J. R. Hunt (1872–1937), American neurologist] An infection of the facial nerve caused by the varicella zoster virus. It is characterized by facial paralysis, vesicles on the same side in the pharynx, external auditory canal, and on the face, and sometimes on the roof of the mouth or tongue. Treatment is with antiviral medications. See also bell's palsy.
