A mucous cyst (mucocoele) formed under the tongue due to the obstruction of one of the ducts from either the submandibular or sublingual salivary glands. It is characterized by a bluish, translucent, fluctuant swelling with possible elevation of the tongue. Ranulas are normally asymptomatic but, if large, may interfere with swallowing. Treatment is usually by excision, although sometimes by marsupialization.
