Seventeenth-century Indian scholar who traveled to the sultanate of Atjeh in Sumatra from 1637 to 1644. Translated Arabic and Persian texts into Malay. Proposed an orthodox interpretation of the Quran and Sunnah, opposing the adaptation of Islam to local custom. Defended orthodox mysticism. Works are still read today in Indonesian and Malaysian religious schools.
