A student of Shaykh Ahmad Ahsai (d. 1826) and a leading figure in the Shii Shaykhi movement. Born and educated in Rasht, Iran, and developed an early interest in Sufism and Shii debates on gnosticism. Succeeded Ahsai as the head of his pupils in Karbala. The mainstream ulama soon labeled the Shaykhis as heterodox.
