A chandler with a particular interest in early English printing, he owned nearly 50 Caxtons, as well as other incunabula, 16th-century books, and some important medieval English MSS. Ratcliffe’s library (3,350 lots in all, many consisting of numerous books) was sold by Christie’s in May and June 1776. George III bought twenty of his Caxtons.
