(1841–1878), novelist and anthologist; born near Sligo, to a landowning family. He wrote two popular Irish novels, Savourneen Dheelish (1869) and Aileen Aroon (1870), the former dealing with the same episode as Carleton's ‘Wildgoose Lodge’, He is best remembered for The Cabinet of Irish Literature, compiled 1876–8.
