A thin tapered metal instrument with a spiral cutting edge used to enlarge, shape, and remove debris from an irregularly shaped canal, to produce a canal round in cross-section. Reamers are usually made of stainless steel with a triangular or square cross-section. They may be hand held or mounted in a dental handpiece. See also file; gates–glidden drill.
