A relatively uncommon fracture of the first rib, thought to be due to a violent contraction of the anterior scalenus muscle. It is characterized by poorly localized shoulder pain. Diagnosis depends on radiography. Treatment is usually conservative (e.g. ice-treatment; immobilization in a sling; analgesics).
