A serine/threonine protein kinase (RIP kinase) involved in the signal transduction machinery that mediates programmed cell death. RIP interacts with the death domain of TRADD (TNFR1-associated death domain protein) and may then recruit RAIDD, leading to apoptosis/inflammation) or NFκB, leading to survival/proliferation. It also interacts with TRAF2 via either the kinase or the intermediate domain. Multiple isoforms (RIP1 (671 aa), 2, 3, and 4) have been described. A RIP-like kinase (540 aa, RICK, RIP2) may be involved in mediating Fas signalling.
