born in Texas, served in the army in Germany, is a novelist of the underground life of sex and drugs, mainly of homosexuals, presented with candid directness in City of Night (1963), Numbers (1967), This Day's Death (1970), The Vampires (1971), The Fourth Angel (1973), and Rushes (1979). The Sexual Outlaw (1978) is a documentary account of men engaged in promiscuous, anonymous sex in public places.
