A superficial muscle at the front (anterior) of the thigh. It is part of the quadriceps femoris. Its origin is on the anterior inferior iliac spine, and its insertion at the base of the patella and tibia via the patellar ligament. Its primary action is flexion of the femur about the hip joint and flexion of the tibiofemoral joint about the knee.
