Quick Reference

A job is red-circled when the results of a job evaluation exercise reveal that it has been ‘over-graded’, resulting in a higher rate of pay for those doing the job than would otherwise be justified. Red-circling typically results in existing employees in these jobs having their earnings ‘protected’; but new entrants to the job will start on a lower rate of pay, matched more exactly to the demands of the job.
